This amp had the following problems:--good tone for 5 minutes, then a nasty, harsh clipping distortion on louder notes (yep, bad tubes were the cause.)--Nasty hum (filter caps and routing problems.)--Dull, muddy tone (needed new caps and tubes.) --The original two-prong power cord needed replacing.

Apr 07, 2016 · Most amplifiers in the 200 watt per channel range (and up) have forced air cooling (via fans) in order to prevent excessive heat buildup. Many amplifiers have a number of features to help monitor the status of the amplifier and also to protect speakers (and the amplifier itself) in the event of an overload condition.
The way to reduce this hum to an acceptable level is to incase all of the guitar's electrics in a metal box and earth that box. That way all the interference will be cancelled out to earth before becoming a nusance.
the hum is entering the grid from a preceding stage. I *do* see the hum at the grid, but the signal is very small. (My concern is I may be seeing an induced signal at my scope probe, and it may be a red herring ..) At any rate, I will have "faith" in my readings and continue to work backwards thru RF coils and RF amplifier towards the antenna ...
